Odyssey of the Mind Team: All Smiles
The VES Odyssey Team - Pokemon on the Go! - is all smiles after completing their performance at the Odyssey of the Mind Primary Tournament, Saturday, March 25, in Auburn, Maine.
The team did a great job of solving their problem. They created a story about a group of Pokemon characters who moved from a beach to an island. Along the way, they lost a friend, but then, found him. They wrote their own script, created their own costumes, props, and a very cool turning set. We are so proud of our primary team! Thank you to coaches Beth Dimino and Julie Adams for all your volunteer time.
Team members are (L to R): William, Dashiell, Darwin, Alex, and Austin

The Science Fair is COMING.....
If you know of any local scientists, or if you work in a science field, VES is looking for a few "judges" to go around and talk with each of our young scientists as they describe their science project. Please contact April Noble if you would be willing to help at this evening event.
The fairy Tale Ball is April 12th from 6:00-7:00.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Congratulations to Evie! Having your art displayed at the Portland Museum of Art during Children's Art Month...you made us all proud!!!!
Attendance in School, Sets students for Future Success
Attendance protocols have been put in place this school year at VES. As a school, we have expectations and procedures in place when a child is sick. We expect children to remain home if they are ill, have a fever of 100 degrees or more, or have vomited in the past 24 hours. We also encourage parents to use judgments when sending kids to school with colds and flu-like symptoms. When sickness is compounded with additional days off for vacations, children can end up missing substantial amounts of school. Research suggests that habits that are created in the early years can lead to future habits as children become older. At VES, we realize the decisions are made by parents and guardians, and not the 5-7 year old children, and we encourage you to send your children to school when it's possible. It is difficult to send work home that the children miss when they are out of school, as much of the learning is hands on, individualized, and facilitated by the teacher.
The new procedures that have been put in place at VES, alert parents when their child has missed school in increments of five days or have been tardy to school in increments of five.
Just as tardies disrupt the morning routines in a classroom, early dismissals do as well. Many think children are not missing much instruction, when they leave the last five to ten minutes early from class, but what they are missing is closing circle...a reflection of the day's learning. They are missing the routine "goodbye's" in the classroom and the set up for the next day. Teachers need to worry about the one child leaving and it can disrupt the flow of the routines in the afternoon. Please consider letting your children stay through the entire day and pick them up at 3:00 in the ampitheater instead of asking to have them dismissed to the office. I know the teachers would be grateful for one less disruption during this time of day. We all appreciate the busy lives that families lead and want to support the many other activities going on, but with consistency and support from parents, we can encourage the growth of the amazing young children to become successful citizens.
Thank you for your support,
